Il Vittoriano
Dominating Piazza Venezia and to many people's chagrin, the Capitoline Hill, Il Vittoriano is a building which strongly divides opinion between the people that live in the city and those that are visiting. Its official name is "Altare della Patria" but it has several others including Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II. If that doesn't quite roll off the tongue you'd also get away by calling it "The Typewriter" or even "The Wedding Cake" if you needed to ask a Roman for directions.

Its somewhat incongruous, modern style, set right in the heart of Ancient Rome has made it a constant source of controversy while many admire this brash, white marble statement.
Inside the building there are various exhibitions that take place while you can also take an elevator to its panoramic terrace (see prices below) and enjoy one of the best views in Rome. You can though wander around much of the structure free of charge and whatever your opinion of its architectural merit, it's certainly worth a visit and is an integral part of the Ancient Rome area, notwithstanding its incongruity with its surroundings.
