I've chosen today a building which strongly divides opinion between the people that live in the city and those that are visiting. Its official name is "Altare della Patria" but it has several others including "Il Vittoriano" and "Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II". If that last one doesn't quite roll off the tongue you'd also get away by calling it "The Typewriter" or even "The Wedding Cake" if you needed to ask a Roman for directions. Its somewhat incongruous, modern style, set right in the heart of Ancient Rome has made it a constant source of controversy while many admire this brash, white marble statement. Either way, it's here to stay!
